Watched this for a second time recently and hadn't realised on the first watch just how Hitchcockian the cinematography is. Layers upon layers. Cannot believe DiCaprio was overlooked for an Oscar nom.

I agree. The film is very melodramatic - but then so were many of Hitchcock's. DiCaprio was excellent (Scorcese seems to get the best out of him) although I thought his performance in Inception was even better.

Only just managed to watch Shutter Island and immediately watched it again. I agree with Ross, the second viewing reveals a film with multiple layers and shows M. Shaylan how it should be done.(The sixth sense et al.) Admittedly I'm a huge Scorcese fan, but is there anything he can't turn his hand to.

^ He is a master. I look forward to everything he does and can't think of a film he's made that I've been disappointed in. Raging Bull is an incredible film, a true work of art.

I also enjoyed both.
Spoiler Alert! In the end of Shutter Island, do you think he purposefully went back to his 'safe personality'. The stuff he said made it sound like he didn't want to remember anymore. Shame. Really sad ending, but good.

^yeah, my take was that he'd rather let them lobotomise him in his 'hero' persona then live on knowing what had really happened in his 'real' life - or had they just fully wiped his personality and turned him into a 'ghost'?? =O)
