Finished this over the weekend and thought it was great. I'm a big fan of Kerr's "Bernie Gunther" books and have read a couple of his previous standalone novels which, while interesting, were not as good as the Gunther books (for me anyway - "Gridiron" is certainly worth a check though). This changed with Prayer which follows the story of an FBI agent looking into a series of natural deaths of people who have offended the Christian right. The agent, a former evangelical Christian, has lost his own faith in God and has drifted into Atheism. An excellent story with enough scares, above average characters and thoughts on faith to impress me.

Read this over the weekend - on your recommendation. Really enjoyed it (I do like a good religious horror/thriller). Some proper scary bits and a clever plot. Good ending too - made sense. Only thing I didn't like was the "visit" by his uncle which just seemed like a tagged on exposition-dump and which stretched credulity just a bit too far. Other than that one I'd recommend.

^agreed the Uncle bit felt a bit tacked-on even when it got mentioned early on.
Glad you enjoyed it!
