I first discovered Pollack's work in the excellent "knockemstiff" collection of short stories and Knockemstiff features in this novel which is one of the best I have ever read.
Several interconnecting stories over a period of twenty years show the lives of a group of wonderfully drawn characters and combine to head towards a showdown that the reader feels compelled to follow. This book is part of what I see as an emerging sub-set within the crime genre that involves writers like Frank Bill and Pollack who are carving out a new niche within crime fiction and also showing readers a place in America that is rarely seen by readers.
I'd classify this one as a must buy, must read.
