Quick question - when you have a character from a series of novels and there are short stories about them what do you like the shorts to contain? Interesting stories or more on things from the novels, back story etc?

I think the story itself is the most important thing. Cross-referencing is good though I think it's a two-way process, the stories can reference the novel and vice versa. The shorts can also be used for scenes excised from the novel of course.

Yes, I'm the same I think - sometimes hard to switch between the two and maintain a consistent 'tone'.
How about series of shorts containing a serial character, should they build towards something more? R E Howard did it a bit with Soloman Kane but I wonder if he had any plan when he started...

I don't think they have to tho I think going from shorts to a novel works better than the other way round. Michael Connelly has written a few Harry Bosch shorts but I didn't enjoy them half as much as the novels, felt a bit short-changed. That's crime tho - and the novel allows for more twists and turns, mihgt work better in a horror context as I think the opposite applies, horror works better in the short form (unless you're Adam Nevill).

^agreed. long form horror that maintains the horror is rare.
