^capt britain aka brian braddock who became brittanic in the excaliber team...
yeah i was a massive comic fan till i was about 17 and then other things got in the way (booze and girls mainly...)
was a massive fan of:
DC-batman (the knightfall/knightsend being my favourite story arc), azrael (sword of azrael series) and flash (terminal velocity story arc being brilliant) (not a fan of superman or green lantern)
Marvel-Generation X (humbeto ramos' initial run was brilliant but the art work got real bad real fast), X-factor (i always wanted to be Multiple Man!), Mindnight Sons, Wolverine, Punisher (Jigsaw puzzle being my favourite story arc)
Image-Deathblow (i still think the 'black angel' run was brilliant, dark as hell), Team-7, Gen-13, Crimson, the Walking dead (the only comic i buy at the moment), StormWatch
also ead quite a bit of indie stuff.
and of course 2000AD was as good as anything put out in the US!!!! (Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Future Shocks, Strontium Dogs etc etc) got 'the Eagle' a lot when i was younger - dan dare and charlies war were excellent

I left comic books around 1972, but they obviously had a huge impact on me now. I think in many ways I still picture my "heros" in the same way.
1) Private, solitary men, with deep secrets and motivations. 2) Larger than life, strong men of action, capable and dangerous. 3) They don't need a motive for what they do. They're doing it for fun, or revenge.
DC's villians were at least criminals. Marvel's villians usually didn't break any laws. All they did was fight the hero, sometimes with no motivation at all. In a way, they were like today's professional wrestlers, colorful blowhards who go out and pound the crap out of each other for stupid, corn-ball, reasons.
Hey, we're horror right? The "Monster" goes out and does evil because he's a monster. The "Hero" tries to kill the monster in order to stop it from doing evil. Not much plot there, but it works.

Wait! I read "Watchmen" only a couple of years ago (UK writer, UK artist). No wonder it was one of Time Magazines 1000 best books of all time. It deserved the honor! What a masterpiece.
I haven't seen the movie.

Of course, Brit Comics aren't doing too bad at the moment. CLiNT is doing first dibs for KickAss2, Dan Abbnett is writing the bulk of Marvels "Cosmic" lines (Guardians of the Galaxy, Ahhinilation, Age of Kings, Nova et al) as well as having epilepsy and churning out Warhammer branded stories at an alarming rate. 2000AD still has a lot going for it (Judge Dredd, the brilliant Zombo, Nikolai Dante, Sinister Dexter, the recent Age of the Wolf...) and eventually Warran Ellis might get round to that epilogue to Planetary that is a meer nine years late...
For those who grinned at the image of Captain Britian, you may want to pick up the Knights of Pendragon trade released a few years back. Cap does the Eco thing! With Arthurian Magic! And W.H.O and...er... Union Jack looking much too much like Cap.

^can't remember the title of the series that ran in 2000AD with an 'eco' story line which had earth magic Vs corporations and 'grey' alien vistors - kind of like a 'near future Slaine'! speaking of which how could i forget bisley's work on Slaine!!!

Love American comics. Currently enjoying the hell out of Mark Waid's Daredevil run as well as his Irredeemable (what if the world's most powerful superhero turned evil?). Been getting back in to Howard Chaykin's stuff after not having read anything by him for years. And I'm having one of my periodic rereads of Frank Miller's superhero work. May try to fit in a reread of Alan Moore's Captain Britain run at some point.

been reading a lot of 'crime' graphic novels recently - the dark horse series is excellent. and i've been able to find some real gems in the forbidden planet sale section.
