someone at work gave me this today. not read it before (though i've seen the film a couple of times). if i remember rightly it is on the list of 20 novels to read in 'on writing horror'. i'll let you know what i think.

quite a 'flat' style which really suits it. only thing i'd say is if you've seen the film there isn't anything different really, it looks like polanski went straight off the page with this one (which is explained in the afterword)

Read this a few months back. Very good, although it wasn't as scary as I remember the film being. The novel had a lighter, more satirical tone whereas I remember the film being more ominous. Of course the fact that I saw the film first is probably influencing my reaction.

^i'd agree if you have seen the film the book comes as no surprise at all - nothing more in the book (unlike with most book-screen translations). Apparantly due to the style Polanski basically used the book as the screenplay. Levin's writing does easily translate tot he screen and i think when i looked all his novels have been filmed ('the boys from brazil' being the stand out and i was quite surprised he wrote 'sliver')
