a few of my favourites:
Blood Meridien - Cormac McCarthy (possibly my favourite novel bar none in any genre)
True Grit - Charles Portis
Cold Mountain - Charles Frazier
anyone have any favourites??
I've also ordered 'lonesome dove' and have a rather low opinion of the 'piccadilly westerns' finding them very two dimensional.

I've not read all that many, but Cold Mountain for sure, and also Thirteen Moons - I love Frazier's style. I recently read Last Stand at Saber River, by Elmore Leonard, which was fun. I've been meaning to read the Dan Simmons one but not got round to it yet.

cheers ray, hadn't realised simmons had written one?
been thinking about trying leonard - saw he wrote 'ulzana's raid' and i love the film so...
i thought the final shootout in cold mountain is possibly the best i've ever read - out doing even the end of true grit

I love Larry McMurtry's books - Lonesome Dove is the best known but he uses the characters in a number of prequels which are equally as impressive.
I liked Simmons' Black Hills - there's a really good story hidden amongst all the history lessons...

It's a massive book but you'll fly through it. The TV series was a pretty faithful adaptation and had Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall in it. The prequels are really good too.

^wasn't that impressed with the film of 'appaloosa' but then i think it was because i was comparing it to the the more masterful recent westerns ('open range', 'unforgiven' etc.). i'll have a check for the books though.

Appaloosa's not a great film but it's pretty decent. I was just pleased that one of Parker's novels finally got made into a film (the various TV movies of his crime novels don't count).

finished 'butcher's crossing' - john williams earlier and though it was superb - deserves to be filed next to 'blood meridien' in my opinon.
