My copy arrived today from Amazon. Gone onto TBR pile - quite near the top.

A stunning piece of work. More Barker than King in my opinion. Can't wait for the follow up book.

Finished this last week and was very, very impressed. A problem with a lot of horror novels is that they lose momentum and the sense of horror is lost in the longer format. Not so in this case, the air of dread and horror is maintained all the way through. Thomas Usher is a brilliantly drawn character and there are some stunning sequences in the book - a lot of images brilliantly described which have stayed with me even now. The whole premise is clever - and well realised, like Charlie Parker I think the ambiguity over Usher's true character (and reason for being...) is fascinating. Very highly recommended.

Machete, is there any rating system you will be using? eg 5/5, 10/10 etc

Not soon enough! I reckon this was the best thing I read all last year. Along with The Harm and How to Make Monsters as best novella and short story collection. Can't wait for more from Mr McMahon.

^have you seen the chapbook he did with swan river press (quite a while back) I think you can get it direct from him. agreed can't wait for the next usher - apart frm the short in the PB of PLDT are there any other Usher shorts? i thought the harm and pretty little dead things really echoed each other and I wouldn't be surprise if they were written very close together.

Not seen that - will have to investigate. Thought PLDT was similar to the first story in Different Skins and the short story in the book has to be linked to Rough Cut.
