I know there was a thread about this on the forum that shall not be named but I hadn't read it then so couldn't comment. Have read it now and thoroughly enjoyed it. A tense, atmospheric story very well told. One of my favourite scenes in Jaws is where Quint is telling the story of the USS Indeannapolis and the atmosphere generated in that scene pervades the whole of this novella. The ambiguity of the story was mentioned a few times in the earlier review and, unsurprisingly, I loved this aspect. I have my own views on what is going on which may be completely off the mark but which keep me happy. No clear resolution may be purgatory for some though. A lovely bit of psychological horror.

Have to agree with most of that. I thought it was a really memorable read. Also as a writer it really made me think about how people think in horrific situations.
(I'd have preferred a more conclusive ending, but that's only a minor comment in an overall very strong read.)

Thanks so much, guys. It means an awful lot to hear what other folk think - especially when the reviews are positive! I've learned a few lessons re being a bit too obtuse since writing Frenzy. I think that the short story lends itself a bit more to ambiguity. But I can see why it might be annoying to get to the end of a novella or novel, something that you've invested a lot more time and energy into, and be thinking: That's it? WTF?

Maybe it's the curse of the Dark Minds anthology. Key people disappearing at vital moments. Carole's last up in the book so I reckon the curse is working in reverse. Next story in line is Clayton's - watch out mate!
